After the War Was Over, 1940s  - A Memory of St Blazey by mike mumford

Just after the war during our summer holidays I was sent from Rochester (where we lived at that time, Dad having been demobbed and then working at Short Bros on the airport), together with my trusty Hercules cycle to spend the full summer school holidays with my Dad's Aunt and Uncle and their little fox terrier here in St Blazey. At that time they lived in Sea View Terrace and seeing Kittows shop brought back memories of my daily morning walk down the steep hill to them armed with an enamel jug to collect the day's milk, and woe betide me if any was spilt on my way back up the hill (only joking, they were two of the kindest people I have ever met).  Auntie Beat was almost as round as she was tall and what a marvellous cook she was, cake was on the table at every meal and... Childhood memories
I noticed with some surprise a photo of myself aged about 12 years. I am the girl on the left with the ponytail the year being about 1960. I don't recall the boys name but it looks as if we are standing by the machine that used to print letters of the alphabet. I think it cost one old penny for 20/25 letters. (more)

Land Army memories
The white weatherboarded house was the farmhouse of the farm where my mother, Joyce Clark, worked along with another 3 girls in the Land Army during the Second World War. She thinks it was called Home Farm. She was there whilst the Battle of Britain was fought overhead. They grew hops, wheat, barley, oats and enough vegetables to supply the local school. (more)

Lifeboatmen
The gentleman laying on the ground in the front is my great grandfather John ''Teapot'' West. He was a fisherman and lifeboatman but also well known for being a ''Fisherman Evangelist''. These fishermenlifeboatmen were strong brave and somewhat exceptional men. There is a phrase used which I think fits them beautifully - ''Iron Men in Wooden Boats''. (more)

"The Annie"
The boat in the middle of your picture was called ''The Annie'' and was wrecked near Goscar Rock in a severe storm. My grandfather (the skipper) was found half drowned by my grandmother on the beach. I recollect from accounts given by my father that the rudder broke in the storm and there was no way to control the ship. It ran aground on the only rock on the north beach between Goscar and the harbour! (more)

Schooldays
In the early 1940s the bay window on the first floor over the front door of Rotherham Grammar School was that of my second form classroom. On a rainy day we were 'attacked' by one of the other second forms as a result of which I was pushed through one of the windows. Fortunately the wartime shatterproof gauze in place prevented me and the window from falling to the ground. Several of us received six of the best for that lunchtime episode! (more)

The Central Stores
My parents ran the Central Stores from 1951 to 1955, their names were Tony and Eunice Jeanes. Central Stores was a veritable Aladdin's Cave to a young boy, full of delights - sweets, colouring books, comics, fizzy lemonade and joy of joys, ice cream in a huge chest freezer. I well remember being rescued from the cavernous interior by my father after falling in while attempting to reach my choice of ice lolly. (more)

Sunday Walks
I was born in Axmouth and most Sundays we would have to walk out to Landslip Cottage. We all knew it as Anne's Cottage because the lady who lived there was called Annie Gapper. She would give my late Mum and Dad a cup of tea. I was one of nine in the family. (more)
